Subtraction Activities

Differences
This is a group of three activities with several objectives. First they are designed to encourage children to understand that the difference between two numbers is found by taking the smaller from the larger. The activities also encourage exploration of this concept with a problem solving approach.

Take Off
This is a game for a small group, designed to promote an understanding of place value.

The game can be played by any age from year 3 upwards. There are many subtleties in the game which are not essential to its enjoyment.

Whole Class Take Off
The game also works well as a whole class activity, in which the teacher shuffles the cards and calls out each number.

Across and Down
This is a an open-ended activity aimed at Year 2. However, you can increase the expectation quite easily to  make it suitable for older children.
